Ecobuild's Discover Design Charette Winner Revealed

  • 03.02.2016

A collaborative design by students from Bartlett School of Architecture has been selected to create a show-stopping centrepiece at Ecobuild 2016. The DISCOVER feature stand will be the show’s central social hub, spotlighting forward-thinking construction and innovation. It will display shortlisted practices from the BD Architect of the Year Awards as well as sustainability solutions from Ecobuild’s Big Innovation Pitch shortlist for 2016.

Ecobuild ran the design competition in conjunction with stand sponsors MEDITE SMARTPLY, leading manufacturers of engineered wood panels, as way of engaging with the next generation of architect. The competition challenged the Bartlett students to create an area which will provide a distinctive oasis within the busy exhibition floor. The aim of the winning design, which was chosen by a panel of judges, is to maximise the use of sustainable materials including MEDITE MDF and SMARTPLY OSB whilst minimising environmental impact and demonstrating how materials will be disposed of responsibly after the event.

DISCOVER is divided into three zones and features a bar with two exhibition spaces. Impressed by what the students achieved in a short space of time, two groups particularly stood out and captured the imagination of the judges who included MEDITE SMARTPLY Marketing Manager, Mike Harrison. He commented: “Of the selected winning designs we were particularly impressed with the use of flowing curves to form the distinct but integrated areas of the stand. With the installation of the wood panels in a horizontal plane, it formed a physical barrier whilst maintaining engagement through visibility to activity occurring on the other side.” The exhibition space has a mix of two environmentally sustainable materials: SmartPly OSB and Medite MDF.

Its two exhibition spaces are complimented with integrated MEDITE seating which flows according to the outer laying structure. The structure of the exhibition space plays with the idea of varying density to create openings which can attract visitors into the space. For the winning students, Ecobuild 2016 gives them a unique opportunity to hone their design skills in a real life application whilst providing exposure for their work. Sam Grice, a member of the winning student team, commented: “It’s going to be exciting to see our designs come to life, especially on such a large scale.” Another member of the team, Nur Sabrina Azaman, commented: “This is going to be a fantastic experience and a great opportunity to gain exposure for our ideas and develop our future prospects in the industry.” Featuring a new improved layout and increased capacity conference arena for 2016, Ecobuild has also been themed to focus on Homes, Architecture and Next Generation across its three days. As leaders in both innovation and sustainability, the MEDITE MDF and SMARTPLY OSB brands are aligned with the ethos of the event and provide the perfect partners for the new DISCOVER destination.
