SMARTPLY OSB3 panels have been used to construct the Wikihouse 4.0, a prototype project that involves open-source design in the built environment. The versatile OSB board is suited to the application due to its structural strength.
With the help of Arup engineers and architects Zero Zero, Wikihouse is the world’s first low-energy house to be constructed. Anyone can download, adapt, ‘print’ and assemble it for themselves, all for under £50k. ENo construction skills are necessary, and it can be ready in a few days.
350 18mm SMARTPLY OSB3 panels of 2440x1220mm were used for the main frame of the structure. As a highly engineered, moisture resistant board it is suitable for internal and external structural applications, this particular use demonstrates its strength in versatile applications.
A CNC machine cut the SMARTPLY panels, which are assembled using a numbered assembly kit. The building blocks cleverly interlink together, with no need for bolts and the final panels are held together using ordinary screws.
Also utilised in the construction was 40 sheets of MEDITE TRICOYA EXTREME for the external window and door frames of the house.
The installation has been built outside The Building Centre in Central London as part of London Design Festival 2014. The events programme will aim to explore how technology might affect a UK housing crisis, through scaling up the self build market. It has been said that the WikiHouse construction method could be used in worldwide disaster zones, due to its cheap and quick construction.
Wikihouse is a non-profit project that involves developing hardware and software to reach necessary development goals. The Wikihouse 4.0 is the most progressive development to come out of the project. All the materials used can be plugged in together with the other building products, electricity and services that create a fully functioning home.
Wikihouse 4.0 is a collaboration between Arup, The Building Centre and Zero Zero Architects.
