SMARTPLY donated 8x4" OSB3 panels to 3rd level student at University College Dublin, in Ireland. 

The UCD Student in the Architecture Thesis Group Agency 2013, was challenged to bring strategic spatial designs directly to communities within the city. Student Donal Groarke showed particular interest in digital fabrication and its application in housing. He designed and built a community shelter, making the most of the performance benefits of SMARTPLY OSB3.

The UCD student used SMARTPLY OSB3 panels in the creation of constructions intended to help with issues in city communities. With its ease of application, the strength and versatility of SMARTPLY OSB3, which is manufactured in accordance with EN 300, lent itself well to this project. The highly engineered, load-bearing panel is designed for use in structural and non-structural applications in humid environments.

“Having use of these materials is extremely beneficial for us as students,” commented, Donal Groarke, Masters student at UCD. “It is important for students to understand the products and materials that will be available to us during and after our training. We are very grateful for SMARTPLY’s generosity and faith in us,” continued Donal.  Donal has since formed a Design Build company with Greg Jackson, another UCD graduate called Jackson+Groarke. They are currently exploring the potential of innovative housing solutions using these materials.

Donal used SMARTPLY, combined with his interest in digital prefabrication to design and create a structure intended for play, shelter, exhibition and performance, it is manufactured from CNC-Cut SMARTPLY. Made from a series of interlocking panels, the structure is designed to be assembled easily by the community.

Because all SMARTPLY panels are FSC-certified and fully chain of custody audited too, they offer an environmentally reassuring natural material choice for both challenging designs and enduring strength. OSB3 is also zero added formaldehyde.

University College Dublin is one of Europe's leading research-intensive universities.
