Loko Restaurant, Ireland
The versatility of Coillte Panel Product’s SMARTPLY OSB3 board has been used to the full on the interior of a new restaurant in Waterford City, Ireland.
When Donagh Cronin and Stan Leslie decided to open a new restaurant in Waterford City, south east Ireland, they wanted to capture the best of the restaurants they had experienced on their travels around the world but with a local feel.
“We chose Loko as the name for our new restaurant as it means ‘place’ in Esperanto,” explains Donagh Cronin. “Loko reflects our global outlook and our sense of a local place. It’s also a subtle hint to Local and slow cooking. The restaurants we love are vibrant, casual and serve great local food. We wanted a ‘shabby chic' interior design that captured this spirit.”
Along with recycled fixtures and fittings, the relaxed interior features modern materials, including SMARTPLY OSB3 sheets from Coillte Panel Products. Designed in collaboration with David Hogan Carpentry and Noel Whelan Furniture, 18mm thick SMARTPLY OSB3 was used for tables, internal signage, shelving in the main bar, the cash till stand and a cutlery stand. Noel Whelan built three pieces of bespoke furniture using hardwood offcuts and OSB3, while local carpenter David Hogan handling most of the joinery elements of the bar and stations fit out.
The OSB3 boards were manufactured in Waterford, using locally-sourced FSC-certified timber. An alternative to plywood, SMARTPLY OSB3 is durable and moisture resistant, making it suitable for structural uses in humid environments such as restaurants.
It is created by compressing alternating layers of wood strands coated with synthetic resin and wax under intense heat and pressure. The result is a rigid, high quality load-bearing panel, with a reliable distribution of strength, stiffness and spanning capacity both along and across the board.
SMARTPLY OSB panels are designed and manufactured for use in a variety of structural and non-structural applications and environments. The product is ideal for flooring, roofing, and framework, with panels available with either square or tongue and groove edges for reliable, quick and easy installation.
“We have been working with Loko for the past nine months and the OSB panels were supplied by Waterford’s Morris’s Builders Providers,” explains Brian White, Area Manager, Southern Region for Coillte Panel Products. “The fact that SMARTPLY OSB3 has been used in so many applications in the restaurant demonstrates the wide range of innovative and creative possibilities it offers to interior designers.”
Loko opened at the end of August and is proving very popular. Cronin says: “Customers love the interior. Not only does the OSB deliver aesthetically, it’s great that the wood comes from nearby and the boards are made in Waterford, which is in keeping with our ethos of using local suppliers for the food and drink we serve!”
