Seeking Sustainability? Look No Further than MEDITE TRICOYA

  • 08.03.2013

This year’s sustain’ Magazine Awards have recognised and championed timber with the selection of MEDITE TRICOYA as Product of the Year. Coillte Panel Products’ extreme durable MDF panel won the accolade at the sustain’ Magazine Awards for Sustainability, Business and the Built Environment.

The great and the green were loudly applauded at a sold-out awards ceremony in London, hosted by impressionist and actor Alistair McGowan and organised by sustain’ Magazine.

MEIDTE TRICOYA won the Product of the Year based on its combined innovation and transparent sustainability. It is a fully sustainable MDF solution. It can be used in applications where wood products may not be the obvious choice and because of the way it performs, unlike any other MDF, it represents one of the biggest advances in panel products in the last 30 years.

As a composite panel MEDITE TRICOYA offers an alternative to solid wood products and even a possible, more sustainable, alternative to other materials such as some metals and plastics. This makes it an exciting consideration for specifiers and end users. During production raw wood is subjected to a patented acetylation technology. This changes the chemical structure of the wood, meaning it is no longer susceptible to the effects of moisture. The result is an exceptionally durable wood-based panel that combines the convenience of MDF with excellent performance in outdoor or very wet conditions.

As a more dimensionally stable material, MEDITE TRICOYA does not warp, has very little swell and dimensional movement and is resistant to fungal decay. These characteristics make it very reliable; it has a service life of 60 years – even for external applications – and carries a guarantee of up to 50 years. Thanks to this guaranteed dimensional stability and durability the material is also low maintenance, so it has a low life cycle cost too.

The raw wood material that goes into MEDITE TRICOYA is sourced from fully FSC-certified forests. The environmental soundness of the FSC certified raw material is carried right through the entire production and distribution process, with a fully audited Chain of Custody in place. Production is extremely resource-efficient. It uses chips from fast grown pine, including the tops of trees, which are not used to make any other wood-based product and would otherwise be sent to waste streams.

Coillte Panel Products takes its role as a supplier of environmentally sound products very seriously. With this in mind, it is not only the products themselves that are as sustainable as possible, but also the methods used and the environment in which they are produced must reflect this ethos too. The company is also committed to the Global Reporting Initiative, which acts as a lynchpin for its corporate responsibility agenda, standardising sustainability reporting to ensure parity with other industry players as well as organisations across diverse sectors too.

Steve Oxley, the Editor of sustain’ Magazine, said: “The calibre of entries to this year's sustain’ Magazine Awards was exceptional. The winners of this year’s Awards have quite clearly demonstrated a desire to push the boundaries of invention or have sought enterprising means to achieve sustainable excellence. Indeed, each of the winning entries presents inspiring and influential solutions to the way we may address our built environment in the future and I would like to congratulate each and every one of them on their success.”

Now in its fifth year, the sustain’ Magazine Awards for Sustainability, Business and the Built Environment are designed to celebrate the high hopes and hard work, commitment and creativity, radicalism and rigour, inspiration and perspiration of all those achieving distinction and success in the field of sustainability. sustain’ Magazine is organised in association with Marshalls and sponsors Land Securities, Galliford Try Partnerships, Carillion, Rexel and Society for the Environment.
