SMARTPLY Toughens Up for Coastal Site

SMARTPLY ToughPly has been utilised as hoarding in a coastal site at Blyth, Northumberland. The fully certified, double-sided pre-coated plywood alternative from the sustainable SMARTPLY OSB3 family is suitable for a range of building applications. As a hardwearing material, it is particularly suited to outdoor locations where long-term durability is a key requirement.

ToughPly was supplied to the site by Arnold Laver’s Hebburn branch. The contractors, D&M Fencing Ltd specified the material carefully based on the demands of the location. The ToughPly hoarding was selected because of its weather resistant properties and was erected and painted at the site along the harbour in Blyth. The coastal location means the site is exposed to the extreme elements and as OSB3 is more consistent than plywood, it will withstand the unusually harsh conditions without blistering and compromising its appearance.

The ToughPly hoarding is situated on the inside of the metal fence that frames the site to protect the sensitive nature of the renewable energy project. ToughPly is an ideal structural panel as the absence of knot holes and core voids, often found in plywood panels, enables secure fixings to be made at any point on the product face. The smooth, pre-finished surface of ToughPly provided an excellent base for the final painted finish eliminating the need for priming of the panel saving time and money on site.

Although the hoarding is only temporary, it will be in place for a while and therefore we needed a material strong enough, ToughPly is the ideal material for the site.”
