Leading Irish timber panel manufacturer, Coillte Panel Products has supported an innovative design collaboration between four Irish architectural practices and Irish Design 2015 for the London Festival of Architecture.
Coillte Panel Products, which has manufacturing facilities in Clonmel and Waterford in Ireland, supplied its innovative timber panels, SMARTPLYOSB, MEDITE TRICOYA EXTREME and MEDITE Premier to be utilised in three separate architectural structures exhibited at the month long celebration of architectural experimentation, thinking and practice, which takes place at venues across London throughout the month of June.
Exhibited at Lewis Cubbit Square in Kings Cross, Clancy Moore, Steve Larkin Architects and Taka Architects designed and built a red pavilion as a perception of public space, in an effort to capture the moments where public meetings take place. Constructed using SMARTPLYOSB for its structural strength and durability, the pavilion incorporates a bridge, stadium stand and bench into its versatile design.
The yellow pavilion, also in Lewis Cubbit Square, has been designed and built by Hall McKnight, which without the weather resistant and superior stability properties of MEDITE TRICOYA EXTREME would not have been possible. Through utilising the panel’s durable properties, the pavilion is expected to withstand the varying British weather conditions whilst holding bricks from terraced houses in Belfast, before being dismantled and relocated along with the other structures. The third structure is currently exhibited at London’s Design Museum.
A large timber and glass structure, the design has been named The Tank by a collection of architects known as Nine Lives. Incorporating both SMARTPLYOSB and MEDITE MDF, used for their strength and longevity when used in exterior applications, the outdoor structure will house displays telling the stories of nine spaces created by the Irish architects over the month long festival. “We’re extremely proud to have been asked to support not only Irish Design, but also Irish architecture and exports.” Says Peter Clifton, Product Manager for MEDITE TRICOYA EXTREME. “When choosing products to build temporary structures such as these, its important to maintain compliance with sustainability regulations, which is why all Coillte Panel Products are manufactured with FSC certified timber.” “Without support from Coillte Panel Products, building these structures would not have been possible", adds Alastair Hall from Hall McKnight. “The pavilions are essentially made from Coillte's products, and if the company hadn't offered it's support with these materials, the whole project would be fundamentally different, as it relies on the structures' ability to stand up in the outdoor environment.”
