UK Green Building Council Sustainable Stand Award
Coillte Panel Products was proud to be recognised for the sustainability of its stand at this year’s Ecobuild. The company won the UK Green Building Council’s Sustainable Stand Award, sponsored by Willmott Dixon, for the under 100sqm category.
The judges of the stand designs were impressed with the resourcefulness employed in the realisation of Coillte Panel Products’ exhibition stand. The whole stand was constructed using the company’s own products, a blend of SMARTPLY OSB, MEDITE MDF and MEDITE TRICOYA EXTREME Durable MDF.
To ensure the sustainability of the stand is as holistic as possible it will be re-used at other shows and events throughout the year. Ultimately all the material will be recycled. On the stand, presentation tables are designed so they can be used independently throughout the year at other events. In addition, since most of the materials are used in their raw state, all cut offs and spare pieces will be used in future stands, resulting in very little final waste. Lighting has been kept to a minimum, using LEDs where possible and just four low energy lamps. Printed material on the stand was kept to an absolute minimum too.
“This is a great accolade for Coillte Panel Products. By using only products made from trees grown in our own forests and produced in our own factories we can be entirely sure of the innate sustainability of the whole stand design,” commented Coillte Panel Products’ Marketing Manager, Joanna Crown, “We have effectively ‘grown our own stand’!”
Steve Roberts of TRC Ltd was responsible for the stand design: “The excellent sustainability credentials of Coillte’s product range was an obvious starting point for us, using these materials in their raw states allowed them to speak for themselves without the need for lots of printed literature. The look of the stand came from the classic outline of a house, an iconic shape within construction and architecture, which was the perfect vehicle to show off these materials at Ecobuild. Visitors were encouraged to interact directly with the materials which were displayed on tables throughout the stand, giving staff the opportunity to engage and scan badges for future contact.”
Commenting on the stand design, Robert Fordham, Membership Services Officer for the UK-GBC, said: “The judges were hugely impressed with the simplicity of the design of Coillte Panel Products’ stand. Almost entirely constructed from its own MEDITE and SMARTPLY MDF products that are made using wood from FSC managed forests planted by the company, this stand was effectively ‘grown’ from scratch. The stand’s sustainability credentials were further boosted by the fact that it will be used at subsequent exhibitions and then ultimately recycled back into reusable products. The judges’ decision to award Coillte Panel Products with the 2013 winner’s trophy in the Up to 100m2 category was a relatively straightforward one.”
