ACOUSTIC

In modern spaces, whether commercial, residential, education or hospitality, sound quality has become a critical element of comfort and wellbeing. The rise of hybrid working, growing noise pollution and expanding regulations around indoor environmental quality are reshaping how architects, designers and builders approach material specification.

The Challenges Shaping Acoustic Performance Today

Meeting modern acoustic standards is increasingly challenging, particularly as updated guidelines across the UK and Ireland require internal floors in dwellings to achieve a minimum airborne sound insulation of 40 dB. As buildings become more flexible and sustainability expectations rise, manufacturers must deliver wood‑based panels that reliably meet these acoustic targets while supporting low‑carbon design and maintaining aesthetic freedom.

Engineered Solutions for Long Term Performance

The SMARTPLY Standard

SMARTPLY produces a wide range of versatile, cost effective and environmentally conscious OSB panels for the market. All of our products are manufactured to be incredibly strong and highly versatile for a range of applications. With added benefits such as moisture resistance, tongue and groove and pre-cut rebates, the SMARTPLY range is the solution when it comes to sustainable panels within offsite construction.

Integrated Technology

Engineered with integrated acoustic technology, our specialised dB products, MAX DB and SURE STEP DB, combine optimised core density, fibre alignment and surface structure to enhance both sound absorption and airborne sound insulation. This built‑in performance means they contribute to quieter, more comfortable spaces without the need for additional layers or treatments, offering architects and builders a streamlined, high‑efficiency solution that supports both design freedom and acoustic compliance.

Testing and Verification

SMARTPLY MAX DB and SURE STEP DB were tested in a series of timber-based joists floor systems in a UKAS accredited laboratory and the floor systems achieved at least 40dB insulation from airborne sounds, therefore allowing a lighter wood-based panel to achieve the required performance.

Quality Assured

All SMARTPLY panels are manufactured in accordance with EN 300 performance standards.

The First Step to Healthy Homes is Silent

When the UK’s new Labour government came to power in July 2024, it committed to the party’s pledge to construct 1.5 million homes across the next five years.

Discover how the UK’s ambitious plan is reshaping material choices, and why acoustic performance in structural flooring is becoming essential for healthier, more sustainable living.
