SMARTPLY Oriented Strand Board (OSB) is the versatile, cost effective and environmentally friendly alternative to plywood. It is suitable for use in structural and non-structural construction uses, as well as countless other non-construction applications. With unrivalled quality and environmental certification, SMARTPLY OSB sheets are among the most environmentally efficient building materials on the market. SMARTPLY OSB is made from locally sourced, sustainable, FSC® certified, fast-growing timber: the forest thinning's of new-growth pine and spruce, including the tops which are not used to make any other wood-based product are used. SMARTPLY OSB boards are fully certified, structurally approved, CE Compliant, legal and sustainable alternatives to tropical plywood. In addition to our environmental credentials, we also contribute to the ‘healthy environments’ movement by ensuring that zero formaldehyde is added to SMARTPLY OSB during its manufacture.
With such a sustainable and environmental ethos and a range of market leading, customer led products, SMARTPLY defines the standard of OSB.
Forestry certification means that the environmental and social effects of a wood producer’s operations have been independently verified. However currently less than 10% of our global forest area has appropriate certification.
The Forestry Stewardship Council is one of the largest and most credible certifiers of wood producers and has the support of major environmental groups (such as World Wildlife Fund, Greenpeace, and the Rainforest Action Network) as well as key inter-governmental forestry bodies.
The FSC certification is internationally-recognised standard that assures buyers of wood-based products that the timber used is a result of environmentally and socially responsible forestry management.
SMARTPLY has received the FSC’s chain of custody certification, covering not only the supply of raw materials but also its manufacturing and distribution processes. Chain of custody certification provides a guarantee to consumers that the product not only comes from a well-managed forest but has passed through a secure environmentally friendly channel from its origin in the forest right through to the time it is installed by the end-user. Only products from FSC-certified forests can be labelled with the ‘tick and tree’ logo.

SMARTPLY OSB is manufactured by compressing precisely engineered strands of woods with exterior resins at high temperature to create an incredibly strong and versatile panel. SMARTPLY is made from sustainable, fast-growing timber, as we only use forest thinnings of new-growth pine and spruce, including the tops which are not used to make any other wood-based product.
This is one of the main reasons why SMARTPLY is increasingly being used instead of plywood, which by contrast use large logs cut from old forests.
We produce two grades of SMARTPLY: MAX and ULTIMA. Each is made with a specific resin, has no structural defects such as knotholes and core voids and is simple to work with. It cuts easily, will not delaminate, and can be bored, routed and planed with consistent results. Panels can be nailed 10mm from the edge without spilling or breaking out - critical to structural applications.
SMARTPLY uses far less energy and resources to make than steel, concrete and other building materials. Over 75% of the energy we use in the manufacturing process comes from wood residues and recovered wood. Burning wood by-products as an energy source instead of fossil fuels increases the CO2 benefits still further.
SMARTPLY OSB structural panels meet the criteria of today’s demanding construction standards. Manufactured to European Standard EN300, they satisfy BS5268 Part 2 (Structural uses of Timber - Code of practice for permissible stress design, materials and workmanship).
