A Decade of Durability: How MEDITE TRICOYA EXTREME stands the test of time

Martin Baker of Baker’s Garden Buildings has been a long‑standing advocate of MEDITE TRICOYA EXTREME (MTX), now specifying it as the core material for his premium, bespoke garden rooms across the South of England. Known for delivering high‑quality, design-led structures, Baker’s Garden Buildings relies on materials that can meet both aesthetic expectations and long‑term performance demands.

Overview

MTX has been embedded into Bakers’ product offering for over a decade. To fully assess its durability over time, we visited one of Baker’s Garden Buildings’ earlier installations crafted with a mix of timber and MTX, which is now more than ten years old, allowing for a direct comparison of condition, performance and appearance after prolonged external exposure.

Challenge

As a manufacturer of premium garden rooms, Baker’s Garden Buildings operates in a highly competitive market where long‑term quality, reputation and customer satisfaction are critical. Timber‑based exterior materials are constantly exposed to moisture, temperature fluctuations and UV radiation, creating risks around swelling, decay and surface degradation.

Martin required a material that not only delivered a high‑end finish but could also withstand harsh outdoor conditions with minimal maintenance. Traditional exterior boards can degrade over time, increasing maintenance requirements and material replacement across a building’s lifespan. A long‑lasting, low‑maintenance solution was key to optimising long‑term performance.

Solution

MEDITE TRICOYA EXTREME was first chosen over 10 years ago as the exterior cladding material for Baker’s Garden Buildings, offering exceptional dimensional stability and durability within their premium garden buildings. Roly Ward, Head of Business Development at MEDITE SMARTPLY, had the exciting opportunity to visit one of their original buildings, which was also crafted using timber trims, a decade on and was able to clearly see the long-term performance of MTX, and compare it to timber.

“Seeing one of Baker’s original garden buildings still performing so well after more than a decade of exposure to British weather provided powerful validation of MEDITE TRICOYA EXTREME and its long-life guarantee. The side‑by‑side comparison with traditional timber clearly demonstrated the long‑term stability and durability MTX delivers. It also reinforced the strength of our partnership with Baker’s Garden Buildings - working with a business that prioritises quality, craftsmanship and long‑term performance makes collaborations like this genuinely rewarding.”

With a 50-year guarantee above ground and 25 years below, MTX is engineered using acetylated wood technology, ensuring resistance to moisture ingress and biological damage, making it ideally suited for long‑term outdoor use.

The visit provided tangible evidence of MEDITE TRICOYA EXTREME’s performance: the MTX panels remained stable, with no visible signs of rot, swelling or structural deterioration, compared to the timber trims which have split and moved over time. The overall appearance had been retained despite years of exposure. This real‑world validation reinforced Martin’s confidence in specifying MTX as a core material for their projects.

“It’s great to come back to a building of this age. It is actually 11 years old, and to have those technical markers and have the timber against the MTX so we can see the difference. The MTX is looking amazing, still exactly as we would expect - stable, no cracking and it really confirms why we now only use MTX for our trims and fascias."

By standardising MTX across his builds, Martin has been able to deliver consistently high-quality garden rooms that meet customer expectations for longevity, reduce long‑term maintenance concerns and strengthen Baker’s Garden Buildings’ reputation for premium craftsmanship with premium materials.
