In March, the Intergovernmental Panel on Climate Change (IPCC) released the final part of its extensive sixth assessment report, which highlights that although the warming of our planet is irreversible, scientists agree that limiting global warming to 1.5°C is still achievable if we all do our bit in cutting carbon emissions. It’s important now more than ever for all businesses to have a plan in place to reduce their carbon emissions.
MEDITE SMARTPLY is committed to becoming an industry leading sustainable manufacturer and it is our key ambition to move towards achieving carbon neutrality by 2030 through scope 1 and 2 emissions. So far, we’re making excellent progress in this respect, but we realise there’s much more we could do. Our longer-term aim is to become a net zero manufacturer by 2050, which is in line with the UK, Irish and EU legislation.
Our SMARTPLY OSB is made from FSC® certified timber from newly grown pine and spruce and our MEDITE MDF consists of 40% wood chip and 60% by-product. Our products are one of the lowest embodied carbon materials commercially available, with a product-specific Type 3 Environmental Product Declaration to support this.
Our work doesn’t stop there. In County Wexford, southeast Ireland, construction is underway on Project Net Zero Home near MEDITE SMARTPLY’s wood-panel manufacturing facilities – a Passivhaus private project in Ireland, which uses recognised, tried and tested housing design standards to create a sustainable family home. MEDITE SMARTPLY products including SMARTPLY PROPASSIV, a structural, airtight OSB/3 panel with integrated vapour control; and MEDITE TRICOYA EXTREME, a ground-breaking construction with outstanding durability and dimensional stability, will play an important role in achieving Net Zero.
