Waterford Institute of Technology (WIT) is making a statement, and MEDITE TRICOYA EXTREME (MTX) MDF is spelling it out.
The word ‘innovation’ will be spelled out in giant two metre letters constructed from technically advanced MDF MTX, the outdoor MDF with a 50-year guarantee above ground. Designed by technology staff at WIT, the letters will be installed by DFL Fitouts and Joinery on the green at the institutions entrance.
“We were delighted to have been able to support WIT by providing the MTX they needed for this installation,” said MEDITE SMARTPLY Research and Development Technician, Jamie Buckett. “MEDITE SMARTPLY and WIT have a long history of working together—WIT now performs laboratory testing for MEDITE SMARTPLY—so it is great to be able to support them in this project.
WIT is a university-level institution in the South-East of Ireland with over 10,000 students and 1000 staff. It has led the way in technology innovation since its establishment in 1970 and has recently commissioned a work of technology-driven art to communicate this fact to the rest of Waterford.
“MTX is the ideal material for the application not only practically, but which truly demonstrates innovation in technology,” Jamie confirmed.
Product and technical experts from MEDITE SMARTPLY were on hand to advise and offer technical support throughout the project, advising on cutting, coating, finishing and installation.
“As MTX is manufactured using sustainably sourced FSC® certified timber and a high-performance no added formaldehyde resin, MTX proves an environmentally sensitive solution for any project – this was an important factor that was discussed at length during the planning process,” Jamie enthused.
Installation
Each letter is 1740mm tall and all together use 26 panels of 18mm thick 2440mm x 1220mm, and 5 panels of 4mm thick 2440mm x 1220mm. They were cut by CNC router by the Waterford-based DFL Fitouts and Joinery, on MEDITE SMARTPLY’s recommendation.
The letters were finished in exterior-grade paint before being delivered to site, ready to install. They will remain weather resistant for up to 50 years at their installation site, where they are a permanent installation.
